Fresh from his 80th year in the show business, the cigar-wielding Burns returns to the screen, giving the Devil his due. George is Harry Tophet, the red-jacketed, glow-eyed, joke-dealing devil-turned-theatrical-agent (Talk about typecasting!) who makes dreams of show-biz stardome come true – for a price. Ted Wass ( TV s Soap ) is the struggling musician who proves again the old adage about being wary of what you wish for – because it just might come true, especially if Tophet is nearby with his pen poised and "lifetime" contract ready. Before the ink is dry, agent Harry had negotiated a megabuck deal with recording mogul Ron Silver ( Garbo Talks ), given Wass a new identity and sent him winging on a smash concert tour as a rock zillionaire. But Wass soon learns that rock s glamour, gigsx and groupies cannot replace the lovely and loving wife (Roxanne Hart) he was forced to leave behind. Wass wants out of the contract but in the enternal scheme, a deal is a deal. Unless, if course, God intervens. So Burns, Perphaps the only person with the range to play both sides of the cosmic coin, reprises his Oh, God! role. Burns as God confronts Burns the Devil in a Las Vegas poker match where the stakes are raised from the young rock singer s soul to everyone s. Who wins? Well, the real winner is you, the veiwer, as George, whether he s God or Tophet, delivers line after hilarious line of Andrew Bergman s (Blazing Saddles, The In-Laws) delightful script, using the impeccable presentation and timing that made him a legend.
