VHS A Bug’s Life 1998
$4.99VHS A Bug’s Life 1998
There was such a magic on the screen in 1995 when the people
at Pixar came up with the first fully computer-animated film, Toy Story. Their
second feature film, A Bug’s Life, may miss the bull’s-eye but Pixar’s target is so lofty,
it’s hard to find the film anything less than irresistible.
Brighter and more colorful than the other animated insect movie of 1998 (Antz),
A Bug’s Life is the sweetly told story of Flik (voiced by David Foley), an ant searching for better ways to be a bug.
His colony unfortunately revolves around feeding and fearing the local grasshoppers (lead by Hopper, voiced with gleeful
menace by Kevin Spacey). When Flik accidentally destroys the seasonal food supply for the grasshoppers
he decides to look for help (“We need bigger bugs!”). The ants, led by Princess Atta (Julia Louis-Dreyfus),
are eager to dispose of the troublesome Flik. Yet he finds help–a hearty bunch of bug warriors–and brings them back to the colony.
Unfortunately they are just traveling performers afraid of conflict.
As with Toy Story, the ensemble of creatures and voices is remarkable and often inspired.
Highlights include wiseacre comedian Denis Leary as an un-ladylike ladybug, Joe Ranft as
the German-accented caterpillar, David Hyde Pierce as a stick bug, and Michael McShane as a
pair of unintelligible pillbugs. The scene-stealer is Atta’s squeaky-voiced sister, baby Dot
(Hayden Panettiere), who has a big sweet spot for Flik.
More gentle and kid-friendly than Antz, A Bug Life’s still has some good suspense and a wonderful
demise of the villain. However, the film–a giant worldwide hit–will be remembered for its most creative
touch: “outtakes” over the end credits à la many live-action comedy films. These dozen or so scenes (both “editions” of
outtakes are contained here) are brilliant and deserve a special place in film history right along with 1998’s
other most talked-about sequence: the opening Normandy invasion in Saving Private Ryan. The video also contains Pixar’s delightful Oscar-winning short, Geri’s Game. Box art varies.Color-95 mins– The case show wear- -
VHS Antz 1998
$2.99VHS Antz 1998
Woody Allen as a worker ant with an inferiority complex? Sylvester Stallone as an affable
soldier ant who discovers that digging tunnels is cool? The animation playground we all
knew so well is turning into a theme park full of in-jokes for grownups. Antz explores age-old
topics (one person–err, insect–can make a difference, individuality and social responsibility must
exist side by side, war is hell) with comic asides and Woody Allen’s funniest quips this side of PG (adults will chuckle
at the socialist slogans bandied about as he campaigns for workers’ rights). Sharon Stone voices the rebellious
princess with a fun-loving streak that doesn’t quite overcome her royal bearing and court training, but she can learn.
Gene Hackman is all teeth (ants have teeth?) and menacing grins as the Army general plotting insect-icide.
This bug’s-eye view of life on Earth gives Allen’s neurotic nonconformist an epic adventure of microscopic
proportions: a devastating war with a termite colony, an odyssey to the fabled land of plenty (a picnic ground),
and a race to save his fellow workers from certain death. Other voices include Anne Bancroft as the Queen, Christopher
Walken, Jennifer Lopez, Danny Glover, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin, and John Mahoney. The computer animation isn’t exactly
realistic but feels as solid and contoured as puppet animation with the smoothness and slickness of traditional cel cartoons,
and the character designs and animation offer a marvelous range of expressions. The PG rating includes a gritty battle
sequence that may frighten youngsters.Color-93 mins– The case show wear- -
VHS Beauty and the Beast (A Walt Disney Classic) 1991
$5.99VHS Beauty and the Beast (A Walt Disney Classic) 1991
The film that officially signaled Disney’s animation renaissance (following The Little Mermaid) and the only animated feature
to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination, Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated
films should be measured. It relates the story of Belle, a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a father;
when he inadvertently offends the Beast (a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself),
Belle boldly takes her father’s place, imprisoned in the Beast’s gloomy mansion. Naturally, Belle teaches the Beast to love.
What makes this such a dazzler, besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie of supporting characters
(the Beast’s mansion is overrun by quipping, dancing household items) is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs by composer
Alan Menken and the late, lamented lyricist Howard Ashman. (The title song won the 1991 Best Song Oscar, and Menken’s score
scored a trophy as well.) The downright funniest song is “Gaston,” a lout’s paean to himself (including the immortal line,
“I use antlers in all of my de-co-ra-ting”). “Be Our Guest” is transformed into an inspired Busby Berkeley homage.
Since Ashman’s passing, animated musicals haven’t quite reached the same exhilarating level of wit, sophistication, and pure joy.

VHS Disney’s Beauty and the Beast – The Enchanted Christmas 1997
$2.99VHS Disney’s Beauty and the Beast – The Enchanted Christmas 1997
Obviously the Disney suits gave more than two figs about the legacy from the first Beast film,
as they reassembled the former cast and spent some cash on production and tune-smithing for this
straight-to-video effort. The events unfold between the time in the first film where Belle bartered
herself to the Beast and her later return to the village to save her father. So the Beast’s heart
still hasn’t been melted yet, and he’s susceptible to the inky persuasions of Forte (Tim Curry),
a malevolent pipe organ (and former music teacher to the prince). Belle is still trying to win over
the Beast and decides that bringing Christmas to the castle will be the way to do it. Please control
that gag reflex for this does work remarkably well, and though entirely unnecessary
and certainly not a complement to the original, it doesn’t tarnish its good name.. Color-72 mins– The case show one area cut and show wear- -
VHS Flipper 1996
$2.99VHS Flipper 1996
The 1963 film that inspired a popular television series about a chatty,
lovable dolphin gets a sunny makeover in this 1996 update. Elijah Wood plays Sandy,
a bleak adolescent from Chicago struggling with the recent divorce of his parents and wanting
only to immerse himself in familiar comforts. Instead, Sandy is sent to Coral Key, an island off Australia,
to spend a summer with his Uncle Porter (Paul Hogan), a benevolent old fisherman. The sights and pleasures of
the island, including a pretty neighbor named Kim (Jessica Wesson), aren’t enough to shake off Sandy’s gloomy
outlook. But when he meets Flipper while boating with Porter, his morale improves considerably, then gets another
boost when Flipper develops a loyal attachment to him. A subplot about a crooked charter-boat company dumping
toxic waste off the coast feels like a necessary evil, just to give the screenwriter something to do. Other than that,
the film is quite fun and charming, and Hogan is a pleasure to see with his cracker-barrel wisdom. Great fun all around
for ages 6 and up. Color-36 mins-The case show wear– -
VHS Free Willy 1993
$3.99VHS Free Willy 1993
Some of us will never understand why this boy-and-his-whale tale became the hit family
film of 1993 and one of the bestselling videos of all time. But it is easy to see how clever
marketing and a tear-jerking story could touch the hearts of kids and parents the world over,
especially because the endangered Orca whale named Willy is such a majestic creature. The story
couldn’t be more conventional–it’s like Old Yeller and The Black Stallion with a big sea mammal–but
as the boy who comes to Willy’s aid against the whale’s exploitative owner, young Jason James Richter
gives an appealing performance with which children can readily identify. After two sequels and an animated
television series, this popular film also had a happy real-life ending: Keiko the whale (who plays Willy)
recovered from failing health and was gradually trained to survive outside of captivity-color 112 min case shoe wear and the cover booklet is missing -
VHS Free Willy 2 1995
$12.99VHS Free Willy 2 1995
Psst: don’t tell anybody, but this time the whale, and all of his whale pals and relatives,
are either computer-generated images or old-fashioned miniatures (models).
The humans in this film are reasonably real, however, including Jason James Richter,
returning to his role as the former delinquent whose advocacy for an imprisoned orca turned
his life around in Free Willy. You may recall that Willy jumped the aquarium fence, so to speak,
at the end of that 1993 family movie, and regrouped in open seas with the pod from which he had been
cruelly snatched. This 1995 sequel again finds Willy in trouble at the hands of the civilized world,
this time due to an oil slick and explosion that may very well kill him or cause him to be locked away again.
Meanwhile, Richter’s growing character has other problems, including a troublesome half-brother and the rumblings
of puppy love. One way in which this film is superior to its predecessor is a greater range of visual opportunities, i.e.,
shooting out on the ocean instead of in the whale hero’s old tank. Of course, it helps that master cinematographer László Kovács
(Five Easy Pieces) is behind the camera. Followed by another sequel- Color-98 mins-case show wear
