Love On The Run, Truffaut s romantic and complex sequel, brings the Antoine Doinel saga to its conclusion. Doinel is about to be divorced. His frist novel has just been published. And the women in his life return to tempt him and teach him again, through a marvelous sequence of flashbacks which brings back to Antoine the bittersweet richness of his experience in life. Truffaut made use of an extraordinary resource in Love On The Run: film he had shot with the same actor, Jean-Pierre Leaud, over a span of twenty years. "When you have the good fortune to have filmed someone at 13 1/2, 19, 24, 28, and then at 33," says Truffaut, "you have some very special footage." Leaud proved to be a wonderful subject. Writing in his book Media Culture, critic James Monoco analyzes Leaud s fascinating appeal. "As Bogart incarnated the experience of those of us that were young in the 40 s, Leaud helps us to understand the life of the young people of the 60 s.
