Vintage… Mondaine of New York…. Art Deco… Black Enamel & Silver….Rouge & Powder Compact…Signed. The compact is marked on the side in script writing “Mondaine…New York…USA”. This wonderful circa 1930′-40’s compact is made of black enamel & silver on the front and back; the front having an art deco style picture of a woman sitting and playing the piano with a “spray” design above the picture embossed into the enamel on the front. There is a small push-button clasp on the side that opens the compact. The inside shows a bit of tarnishing (which is to be expected for its age) showing an intact and good usable mirror with no cloudiness or flaws encased in a silver filigree finish as well as a face rouge compartment and a face powder compartment with small little metal tabs that lift up to reveal the face rouge and face powder. The rouge is still there and full, but the face powder has only some left in it. The original puffs are affixed to the top of the compartments with little metal hooks; these are intact as well. The puffs are a pink color with little embroidered or crocheted little circles on the front at one end to pull the puff off the metal clasp and the edges are also crocheted or embroidered all the way around the edging of the puffs. The powder puff has been used, but the rouge puff looks like it has only touched the rouge but not actually been used. There are 2 very small “dinks” on the back (see photo) and some minimal surface scratches probably due to age. The compact measures approximately 3″ x 2 1/8″ x 1/4″ high. I would say that this is in good vintage condition as I only see minor age-related scratches, 2 “dinks” on the back, used puffs and face powder. I did research this piece and could not find this EXACT compact, which leads me to believe that it may be a rare piece! This is truly a spectacular vintage collectible!
