There were (5) Santas to this set. They were a Christmas shopping promotion put on by Boscov’s Dept. Stores. You had to have the coupon from the Boscov’s ad in the Sunbury newspaper to be able to buy one each week for the (6) weeks before Christmas. They ran this promotion every year for several years, w/different items & I have every collection, which tells you I have too much & have to let some of them go! LOL! Each Santa is in his original box.
The Collection:
1. 1880 – St. Nicholas
2. 1890 – Kris Kringle
3. 1900 – The Victorian Santa
4. 1920 – The Contemporary Santa
5. 1940 – Jolly Old St. Nick
These are about 4 1/5″ high. They are in perfect condition They are nicely handpainted. They have a marking on the bottom. Looks like each eas numbered in the set & where they were made in Taiwan 1990.
The image of Santa Claus is one of the most familiar in the world. For as long as anyone can remember, the jolly, elderly, fat, bearded man in a red suit trimmed with fur has been the symbol of the nation’s most popular holiday.
But like many things, the reality of Santa is more complicated than the appearance. His origins are complicated. In earlier traditions, he punished as often as he rewarded. And he didn’t always look the way he does today. As few as 140 years ago, Santa could be portrayed as a gnome-like little man, or a dashing beardless violinist, or a dignified bishop wearing a traditional miter. The history of Santa’s changing form is closely tied to the history of Christmas, perhaps the most American of all holidays.
